Extending at the rear of the existing house on the ground and first floors the design aims to maximise natural light and views across the south facing garden by improving internal circulation and creating a better relationship to the outside.

Services are kept on the west side to allow the communal space to occupy the full width of the south aspect (rear) of the house. The original small kitchen has become the link through to the new extension, providing a utility space and access to the rear garden via an existing side passage, whilst the space under the stairs has been converted into a ground floor WC.

The rear single storey extension with its modern mono-pitched roof and raking overhang forms an open plan kitchen, dining, family room replacing the old draughty conservatory. The corner-less bifold doors allow a seamless extension of the living space into the garden opening onto a large patio with an outdoor dining space. The rain chain is an attractive alternative to the mundane rainwater pipe.

At first floor, the original third small bedroom has been converted into a new larger bedroom suite with en-suite and fitted cupboards leading to an apex roof over the large double bedroom. A Juliet balcony at the gable end of the bedroom looks out over the rear garden. This is now a 3 double bedroom house with comfortable, flexible, ground floor accommodation and the client is delighted with the result.
