Sustainable Renovation and Extension of 1970’s Detached House
Newnham, Cambridge

AC Architects have sensitively transformed a detached 1970’s property in Newnham, with pitched roofs over new front, side and rear single storey extensions.

The whole house refurbishment improves living accommodation at both ground and first floor levels. The attractive open plan Kitchen-Dining-Living space transforms the existing cellular layout giving a sense of openness, enhanced by the direct connection to the garden through 4 metre wide sliding doors. Natural light is maximized throughout, with rooflights over the Hobby room and bespoke ash staircase. The connection to the outdoors is emphasised by sightlines through the house and glazed internal doors.

The project also included the installation of solar thermal and photovoltaic panels on the roof (with energy efficient heating and hot water controls), internal insulation and solar control glazing as well as the conversion of the garages into a Hobby room and Bike Store.
