New Office, North Cambridge
North Cambridge

AC Architects Cambridge Ltd designed the new offices, and headquarters, for the Conservators of the River Cam. The design of the offices takes advantage of their prominent location on the bank of the River Cam within the grounds of the Grade II Listed Conservators House.

The unique and challenging site included stabilization of the attached derelict early 18th Century cottages and a large number of trees, some with preservation orders.

The building is highly sustainable with a well-insulated envelope, rainwater harvesting to supply the building’s wastewater systems and an air source heat pump powering the underfloor heating and hot water system. Natural daylight and views onto the River Cam have taken priority in the design in order to achieve an excellent working environment for the office-based staff.

The building’s materials retain the utilitarian aesthetic of the Conservators yard with dark weatherboarding, yellow bricks and slate. The design of the prow references the river-based activities of its occupants, complete with salvaged finial from the new buildings defunct warehouse predecessor.
